Gita in my view is a complete thesis on politics--politics of survival--there is not much of religion there except that its politics has been sanctioned in the name of God.
However, political message of Gita is undoubtedly extremely powerful. What did we learn there?
1>> Killing of opponent is essential and part of your religious duty if so needed.
2>> You can't leave the ground by the excuse of humanity
3>> Humanism is a trait of the cowards and it is an excuse to avoid the war needed to establish a 'lawful' society. [ Well Dharma Rajya--Muslims call it--Dar-ul-alam--land of Allah]
4>> When war is inevitable, if you avoid it showing humanism, it serves no purpose to humanity and history will remember you as a coward and not as a humanist.
5>> You do not commit a sin when you kill your opponents in the war for establishing your religion..
There are some more to it. In those days, people didn't know about DNA codes. So concept of Atman was brought in. Atman is an entity which is neither matter, not energy, nor destructable part of human beings--by definition only genetic code comes close to it--the code is passed into next generation without almost any change--and it is the genetic code that continues--human body just takes shape around the code from father to son.
However, in all the standard commentaries of Gita, Atman is explained with mysticism-and such explanation has no rationality. To a rationalist like me, concept of Atman arose from a philosophical question: human beings must have an existence which should be invariant ! Because otherwise, we can not define a human being-we become liquid. They didn't know science enough in those days and therefore fictitious Atman was brought into concept. Atman is invariant existence of human being that is neither born nor ever be dead. Human body changes-mind evolves--only invariant part is DNA code!
Anyhow, what Krishna said if I translate in biological term--killing of human beings for the cause of a better society can not be counter productive--because ultimately you are just killing a physical body--but his genetic codes will continue to prevail through his kids--hence repenting on physical body is useless--because at the end of the day, you have to ensure evolution of genetic codes and its superior modification adapting to nature.
Unfortunately Gita was a neglected Hindu text for centuries. Only modern revival of Hinduism-struggling against monotheism brought this book for Hindu nationalism. However, Hindus are born coward for centuries and divided in casts. Hence they collapsed like a house of card before Muslims and Christian invasion.
So even if Gita and its principles have been laid out for a warrior like Hinduism, in essence, Hinduism stooped to a religion of bunch of cowards fighting among themselves for the superiority of cast and noble birth. There would be no Pakisthan if Hindus would have been imbibed with philosophy of Gita--every Hindu would have fought with last drop of his blood to stop partition.
There is an attempt to portray Hinduism as a religion of non-violence. That is completely against teaching of Gita--indeed Krishna directly told, preaching of non-violence by Arjuna is nothing but weakness and cowardice attitude.
Let's admit the truth-Hinduism is proudly a religion of violence and consider fighting as essential element of their religion. Denial of this truth serves no purpose either for the Hindus nor its opponents.
